This is according to Gallup's most recent survey of U.S. employee engagement, where "employees in the U.S. continued to feel more detached from their employers, with less clear expectations, lower levels of satisfaction with their organization, and less connection to its mission or purpose, than they did four years ago." In fact, these employee engagement numbers are the lowest we've seen in a decade. If your organization falls within this category, this means that the majority of your organization is either punching in the clock or negatively impacting morale and teamsmanship in underlying, quantifiable ways. The silver lining is that you have cadre of employees who are motivated and you can improve these numbers.
The pandemic disrupted how employees and teams connect. As a long lasting consequence of the pandemic and these trends, commitment levels between the employee and employer and even between employee and employee have changed. Work has become more transactional and less about relationship building. Simultaneously, commitment shifted from the workplace back to the home as family well-being and self-care became priorities. Measuring how engaged employees are and improving that engagement has been widely accepted to be the most constructive way to achieve symbiosis between employer and employee. Historically, this has been subjectively measured through periodic employee surveys requiring time and effort from management and employees.
When disengaged companies and employees are compared to their engaged counterparts, the differences are substantial:
Institutionalizing the measurement of employee engagement is a key aspect of evaluating organizational change (ex. return-to-office mandates) and the downstream impacts on departments, teams, and individuals. A few reasons why this is more important now than ever before...
When asked about the Amazon RTO mandate, Mike Hopkins, a senior vice president, offered a vague response, saying that he had no data either way on whether mandating in-office work made people more productive, but that executives believe Amazon's workers do their best work when they're together (Business Insider).
